Matthew James O'Brien (born September 24th, 1989), better known by his ring names Matt Nitro and Nitro Kyx, is a Canadian professional wrestler, mixed-martial artist, actor, event promoter and trainer currently signed to United Kingdom-based promotion Fusion Pro Wrestling (FPW), where he was one-half as the inaugural FPW Men's Tag Team Champions alongside other members of The Zero, under the Freebird Rule. He also makes regular appearances for Battle Championship Wrestling (BCW), an Australian independent promotion owned and operated by longtime friend Josh Poffo.

He is known for his time with Virtual Wrestling Entertainment, where he competed on the PULSE brand and became the VWE PULSE Heavyweight Champion, holding the championship for fifty days, before dropping it to Nyle Nightfire. While a member of the VWE roster, Nitro Kyx also took part in a highly-anticipated three-way tag-team elimination match at VWE Versus 2020, as a member of Team PULSE alongside Draven Campbell and Adune Snowpaw. This match also included Team VWE and Diamond Club.

Elsewhere, Nitro Kyx is known for his time with Virtual Attitude Wrestling in 2013, where he captured the VAW Intercontinental Championship on two seperate occasions from Damien Hex and Tetsu Oyama, as well as becoming the VAW Legacy Champion upon his second return to the company in 2017. Additionally, Nitro Kyx was a founding member of The Union, a paramilitary-esque faction that wreaked havoc across VAW during the summer of 2013, alongside Scott Hex, Jeni Porta, The Wrath, Lucas, and Dixie Dream. During his run with the company from 2018 to 2019, Nitro Kyx was awarded the Social Media Mogul and Comeback Of The Year awards at the VAW Anniversary Award Show in January 2019.

Career History[]

EVW Wrestling[]

2010[]

In mid-2010, Matt Nitro signed a developmental contract with upstart promotion Extreme Virtual Wrestling (EVW), a hardcore wrestling company owned and operated by Maven Gothly. It was at EVW where Nitro first got a glimpse of the professional wrestling industry and would ultimately train under Maven Gothly, Stixx Mayhem, and Kit Dagger until January 2012, when the promotion folded. Despite under contract for the promotion for nearly six months, Nitro would never make his debut for the company. Nitro is a member of the same graduating class of the EVW Wrestling Academy as fellow VWE Alumni and Australian wrestling promoter, Josh Poffo.

In early June 2012, Matt Nitro signed a developmental deal with small, independent promotion Xtreme Live Wrestling (XLW). Following months of additional training and character development under Joshua Watson, who made a name for himself as Octane on the Mexican lucha-libre circuit, Matt Nitro made his official in-ring debut on the August 27th, 2012 episode of XLW Mayhem in a short exhibition match with his trainer. Throughout the following weeks, Nitro would continue to wrestle Octane in one-on-one matches, as the two eventually competed against each other to determine the holder of the then-vacant XLW Heavyweight Championship, a match that Nitro would win. On the September 24th, 2012 edition of XLW Mayhem, Nitro made his first official defense of the championship, in a match that pitted him against his storyline father, Neo Dragga. On the October 20th, edition of XLW Mayhem, Romlic "The Rebel" Diamond defeated Nitro to capture the XLW Heavyweight Championship, but dropped it back to Nitro the following week in a rematch. As champion, Nitro competed against the likes of Mac Gaelyth, Romlic "The Rebel" Diamond, & Scott Hex. However in December of 2012, due to lack of sponsorship and funding, XLW ceased it's operations and marked Matt Nitro as the final holder of the title.

APW Wrestling[]

2013[]

Following the closure of XLW in December 2012, Nitro took a short break from professional wrestling to focus on healing injuries that he had sustained while with the company. During this time, he was approached by a talent scout with Apocadelic Performance Wrestling (APW), an independent company owned by Broly Blackheart. On the January 19th, 2013 edition of APW Ignition, made his debut in a losing effort towards Damien Hex. Over the following weeks, Matt Nitro would compete in matches against Maven Gothly & Curt Bombastic, with the three trading the APW Metaverse Championship back and forth during live events. Through a partnership with Virtual Attitude Wrestling (VAW), which allowed both competitors to wrestle for APW and VAW regularly, Damien Hex and Matt Nitro would once again wrestle each other at the inaugural APW Night Of Destiny show inside a Steel Cage. This match would mark Matt Nitro's final appearance for APW.

VAW Wrestling[]

2012-2013[]

Around the time XLW closed it's doors, it began to circulate that Matt Nitro had been in contact with Virtual Attitude Wrestling, a promotion that widely considered the second largest wrestling company at the time. At a taping of VAW Carnage Zone in December 2012, Nitro would appear ringside and was mentioned countless times throughout the show by commentary. During the fan convention attached to VAW No Remorse 2013, it was announced that Matt Nitro had officially signed with the company, a deal that allowed him to appear on VAW programming and still accept outside bookings. Taking advantage of this, Nitro would often appear for small independent promotions throughout North America, including Ring Of Warriors Wrestling (ROW), where he held the promotion's heavyweight championship for a brief time and NEXT Legends of Wrestling (NLW), where he was recognized as a two-time NLW United States Champion.

VAW Union

During the first half of his initial tenure with VAW, Matt Nitro appeared as a high-flying over-the-top masked wrestler with deep roots in the style of Lucha-Libre. At VAW Hardcore Rebellion 2013, Matt Nitro defeated Damien Hex in a Steel Cage Match to gain the VAW Intercontinental Championship for the first time. His reign was short-lived, as he quickly dropped the championship to Tetsu Oyama, a young protege of Shinja Ugajin. However, as weeks followed, Nitro was revealed to be a member of the villainous faction, The Union, and would become the VAW Intercontinental Champion once more at VAW Bully 2013, defeated Tetsu Oyama in a Tables Match.

Throughout the following months, Matt Nitro would continue his rivalries with Damien Hex and Tetsu Oyama, as the infrastructure of the Union slowly crumbled around him. Innner-turmoil formed within the Union, as the group soon found themselves in a civil war of sorts, before ultimately breaking up following the removal of Jeni Porta and Scott Hex from the group. After departing the Union, Nitro found himself back at square one, and would compete in the VAW World Championship Tournament, but was eliminated in the first round, following an ankle injury at the hands of Michael Karsin in September 2013, Matt Nitro was quietly released from his contract and took a hiatus from professional wrestling to pursue his interest in acting.

2016-2017[]

In December 2016, as part of Vince Aftermath's re-envisioning of VAW, Matt Nitro was signed to a short-term contract, which allowed him to work a small amount of dates for the promotion and still be able to pursue his outside ventures.

On the January 6th, 2017 episode of VAW Elite, Matt Nitro made his official return to VAW in a losing effort to then-VAW Legacy Champion, Tyler Crisis. Over the following weeks, Matt Nitro and Tyler Crisis would feud over the championship, with Nitro ultimately capturing the title on the March 4th, 2017 edition of VAW Elite. Shortly thereafter, Matt Nitro was faced with yet another new threat in up-and-comer, Pasta Lopez, and after a month of matches together, would drop the championship to him and exit the promotion for the second time.

2018[]

Following the departure of Vince Aftermath and Jeni Porta from VAW, Matt Nitro began negotiating a new, short-term deal with the company, this time under new management in Alyce Faithful and Henry Parker. At VAW Macabre II 2018, Matt Nitro made his third and final return to the company in a match with ring veteran, Mike Romo. Following this match, Matt Nitro began a heated social media rivalry with "The Tomahawk" Henry Parker, which would eventually spill into the ring, as the two faced off numerous times through October and into the end of December, before Nitro was released from his contract for violating the company's wellness policy. Nitro has since stated, "I owe a lot to [Henry] for bringing me back into wrestling. He was part of the reason I decided to come back in the first place. I wasn't happy [at VAW] when [Vince] was in charge, but [Vince] also gave me my first break in this business, so I owe a lot to him too, and I would work for him in a heart beat again."

ROW Wrestling[]

2013[]

On August 16th, 2013 and the first episode of ROW's weekly show, Crusade, Matt Nitro was defeated by David Van Damme in the main event match to determine the inaugural ROW World Heavyweight Champion. Following roughly a month of back and forth action, Matt Nitro and David Van Damme once again main evented, this time in ROW's first episode of their second weekly show, Odyssey, in another World Heavyweight Championship bout. In this match, Van Damme retained the championship via disqualification following outside interference from Baldisar McGuinness.

DSE Wrestling[]

2014[]

As Matt Nitro began to recover from his ankle injury which led to his departure from VAW in 2013, he began to get in contact with various independent promoters across the Northwest United States and became close with Shawn Tyson, whom he had met during his time with VAW. During his time with DSE, Matt Nitro mainly wrestled former XLW alumni, Matt Miller in one-on-one competition, and protege Shawn Tyson before ultimately capturing the DSE Chaos Championship from Blood Hawk in 2014. He would later drop the title to the debuting Jamal Travis in March of that year and exit the promotion.

ACW Wrestling[]

2015[]

Following his departure from DSE, O'Brien, working under his Matt Nitro moniker, made a surprise appearance on an episode of ACW Sabotage in March of 2015, during a segment also featuring Mr. Hollywood and Voodoo "The Bear" Cooperstone. The following week, it was announced in front of the live audience that Matt Nitro had signed a short-term contract with the promotion, allowing him to work limited dates as well as continue to work with outside promotions in the US. During his short stint with ACW, Nitro adopted a new look and new persona, claiming to bring war to the ACW locker room and take out anyone who stood in his way on his path to the ACW World Championship. Following a month-long rivalry with industry newcomer Rachmiel Constantine, and competing against the likes of Mr. Hollywood, Evil Ernie, and others, Nitro tested positive for marijuana use during a random drug screening and was suspended from the company, before quietly being released from his contract shortly thereafter.

2015[]

Soon after his departure from Apex Championship Wrestling, Nitro Kyx was in contact with independent promoters throughout the United States, including All-American Pro Wrestling and Prime Time Pro Wrestling. Following four months of working the independent wrestling scene, Matt Nitro made a one-off appearance for New Millennium Wrestling in a match against Stan Warbaum. Shortly thereafter, Nitro would take on a backstage role as a producer and agent, filing in for the departing Seth Cameron, who returned to Virtual Wrestling Entertainment as their Chairman full-time.

VWE Wrestling[]

2016[]

In between stints with Virtual Attitude Wrestling, Nitro wrestled briefly for Virtual Wrestling Entertainment, working a series of matches on Primetime with Braden Karsin & Vince Easterwood. These were reportedly tryout matches, in which VWE were scouting Nitro in hopes to sign him to a long-term contract. The promotions ultimately passed on the contract offer, however brought him back a couple more time to do extra work in backstage segments, alongside future VWE superstar John Demina.

2018[]

Following the return of Seth Cameron as VWE Chairman, it was reported that he had signed a small group of male and female talent from the independent circuit to VWE developmental contracts that would see them compete in VWE's farm territory, PULSE Wrestling. Included in this group was Matt Nitro, who was quickly re-branded as Nitro Kyx and debuted on the September 1st, 2018 edition of PULSE in a match against fellow VAW alumni, Bert "Turbo" O'Neil. Following a series of squash matches in which Kyx was used to help further storylines between then-reigning PULSE Heavyweight Champion, Austin Knight, and "The Gunslinger" Matt Asadar, Nitro requested his release from the company, citing creative differences as his main reason for leaving.

2019-2020[]

Nitro Kyx VWE 2020

Following his release from VAW in 2018 due to a violation of the promotion's wellness policy, Nitro Kyx took a year long hiatus from the professional wrestling industry, to heal up nagging injuries and to reinvent himself. Towards the end of fall 2019, Nitro Kyx reached a deal with Virtual Wrestling Entertainment and signed a per-appearance contract with the promotion, which would see him perform on the PULSE brand. During this time, Nitro Kyx began rivalries with "The Gavel" Adune Snowpaw, Kerok, and Corrupted, while rapidly positioning himself as a top contender for the PULSE Heavyweight Championship. He would later defeat Kerok for the title on an episode of PULSE, before dropping it to Nyle Nightfire two months later. He later competed at VWE Versus as a member of Team PULSE alongside wrestling legend Adune Snowpaw and future champion Draven Campbell, and then unsuccessfully challenged Nyle Nightfire for the PULSE Championship once more, before departing from the promotion in April of 2020 due to undisclosed personal reasons.

Premier Wrestling[]

2020[]

On July 13th, 2020, it was confirmed via multiple media outlets that Nitro Kyx had signed a contract to compete in one match with Premier Wrestling. At a house show on July 18th, 2020, Nitro Kyx made his promotional debut in a losing effort in a Falls Count Anywhere match against BK. Following this bout, Nitro Kyx would part ways with Premier Wrestling, citing creative differences as the reason.

2022 - Present[]

On January 1st, 2022, Nitro Kyx revealed on his official Twitter page that he had begun working with Premier Wrestling once more. He is set to be featured exclusively on Premier Wrestling's untelevised touring show Unplugged.

On December 14th, 2020, it was announced that Nitro Kyx had a signed a short-term deal with Slam City Pro Wrestling. On the January 2nd, 2021 episode of Slammed, Nitro Kyx interrupted a segment featuring inaugural SCPW World Champion, Bazza Windlow, and his new villainous faction, Trench Brothers. This led to a match between the Kyx and the reigning champion that ended following a distraction from Neon Shadow and "The Big Shot" Benja Nirvana. Following the match, the faction began a brutal beatdown on the SCPW newcomer, which ended after Josh Poffo made the save, only to turn his back on Nitro Kyx and join Trench Brothers. However, soon after, semi-retired Curt Bombastic emerged from the ringside area to fend off the members of Trench Brothers and come to the aid of Nitro Kyx. The following week, on the January 9th, 2021 episode of Slammed, Nitro Kyx teamed with the returning Curt Bombastic in a losing effort to Trench Brothers members Josh Poffo and Benja Nirvana after yet another beatdown from the faction. Following the company's closure, Nitro Kyx relocated to London, England to begin his work with Fusion Pro Wrestling.

However, shortly after, was released from his contract, citing issues in regards to his visa as the primary reason. These issues have since been resolved and Nitro Kyx has been able to travel internationally to wrestle.

Return to FPW[]

In late November 2021, it was reported that Nitro Kyx had been negotiating a deal to return to the company. On November 23rd, this was confirmed when it was announced that Nitro Kyx would be competing in the main event of FPW Uncensored on November 29th, in a match that pitted him against a man he had long looked up to in Bazza Windlow, leader of the Trench Brothers. This would mark Nitro Kyx's first match since losing to Stixx Mayhem in their infamous deathmatch at BCW Underground in August 2021. On the November 29th episode of FPW Uncensored, Nitro Kyx made his return to the ring in a losing effort to Bazza Windlow after Windlow countered Nitro's patented Starbreaker Lariat with a GTS for the pinfall. On the December 9th episode of FPW Allegiance, Nitro Kyx would gain a quick victory over FPW original, Bobby Henderson. The following Monday on the December 13th episode of FPW Uncensored, Nitro Kyx would square off against Josh Poffo. He would pin Poffo following a Fisherman's Suplex, despite interference from Bazza Windlow and Benja Nirvana. This match was described as a "technical classic" by multiple sources present for the event. At FPW New Year's Collision on January 6th, 2022, Nitro Kyx would face off against Shawn Watkins, in a match that saw Nitro Kyx pick up the win following back and forth chain wrestling action. It is said that following this match, Kyx was very impressed with Watkin's in-ring work. On the first episode of FPW Allegiance in 2022, Nitro Kyx would go head-to-head with Bazza Windlow, once more. This match ended in a no-contest following interference from members of both The Zero and The Trench Brothers.

BCW Wrestling[]

2021-Present[]

Since mid-June 2021, it was rumored that Nitro Kyx had inked a deal with Australian promotion, Battle Championship Wrestling, owned and operated by longtime friend, Josh Poffo. Previously, Nitro Kyx wrestled for Poffo's Pro Wrestling Australia and Global Championship Wrestling promotions, on a recurring basis, dating back to 2014. Later, it was soon confirmed that Nitro Kyx had indeed signed with the company and would be appearing on their weekly events moving forward. On the July 6th, 2021 taping of BCW's Battlezone program, Nitro Kyx made his debut for the promotion in a match against fellow EVW alumni, Stixx Mayhem. Nitro Kyx lost this match. The following week, Nitro Kyx made quick work of newcomer Blood Jack. Later in the night, Nitro Kyx interrupted a match between Stixx Mayhem and Josh Poffo, attacking Mayhem with a steel chair, allowing Josh Poffo to score the pinfall victory. On July 20th, 2021, Nitro Kyx faced Stixx Mayhem, a week after Nitro interrupted Mayhem's match with Josh Poffo. During the match, Nitro Kyx took out the official and connected with a piledriver onto a steel chair to score the pinfall victory. On the July 27th, 2021 show, Nitro Kyx made quick work of the returning Hideo Takagi, before interfering in Stixx Mayhem's match with Bo Drago later on the evening. During their altercation, Nitro Kyx would ultimately throw Stixx Mayhem from the balcony and through a table in the ringside area. August 10th, 2021 saw the culmination of the violent rivalry between Stixx Mayhem and Nitro Kyx, as the two faced off against each other in an Exploding Barbed-Wire Deathmatch to crown the new BCW Hardcore Champion, where Stixx Mayhem emerged victorious following interference by the debuting Kayne Navarro. The following week, while recovering in the hospital, Nitro Kyx addressed the BCW audience via a pre-taped recording, stating that the actions of Kayne Navarro would not go unnoticed as they cost him the BCW Hardcore Championship. However, due to scheduling conflicts, Kayne Navarro was no longer able to appear for the promotion and the angle was scraped. Nitro Kyx would take a hiatus from BCW following this.

Return to BCW[]

On the December 7th, 2021 episode of BCW Battlezone, Nitro Kyx made his return to the company, aligning himself with The Zero in their battle against Bazza Windlow and the Trench Brothers. He would defeat Josh Poffo with a quick rollup during this show, following interference from Bazza Windlow. On the December 14th, 2021 episode of BCW Battlezone, Nitro Kyx would accompany Maven Gothly, a fellow member of the Zero, to the ring for his match with Bazza Windlow. At BCW Final Clash on January 4th, 2021, Nitro Kyx defeated Josh Poffo in a Steel Cage match. This match was originally scheduled to be a tornado tag team match featuring the team of Stixx Mayhem and Nitro Kyx facing Ashe Cuervo and Josh Poffo, but this was changed last minute due to injuries on both teams. United Wrestling Federation[]

In April 2018, Nitro Kyx, alongside former New Millennium Wrestling promoter Sam Luciano, founded United Wrestling Federation (UWF), a wrestling promotion with a focus on long-term storytelling, adult-oriented content, and developing characters. The roster featured countless wrestling veterans including DavidHawk Actor, Shelly The Bod, Maven Gothly, Loody Graves, and Josh Poffo.
